While most people rely on their cellphones and iPads to access news, the digital approach in distributing real-time news to people isn't limited to these. Digital kiosks using digital signage software which include social media widgets are now being use to combine OOH and news syndication as well. One of the most innovative use of these news kiosks is located in London. Green tech company Renew Solutions developed a great way of distributing news,OOH advertising, and promoting green technology through the use of "smart bins". Smart bins are actually trash bins made digital by incorporate LCD screens in order tod display news and stock quotes. More than 20 units are deployed in London but looks to add 100 more before the 2012 Olympics starts. Renew's network of over 200 screens are view by almost 800,00 people everyday and is expected to increase to 3 million during the London Olympics.

The company partners with a network of leading companies and advertisers to distribute real-time content and relevant information. Renew's smart bins display an eclectic range of information ranging from corporate and financial news to fashion and sports. The great thing about this digital kiosk is its double functionality. It acts as a newspaper but also a trash bin that which people will notice one way or another. Renew explains how their smart bins applies non-invasive pervasive branding on their smart bins: "you don't have to shout when people want to listen". The screens will be a valuable resource for professionals on the move, helping to keep them connected and informed."
